How to calculate ERAs

Instructions

1. Step 1

   Add up the total innings pitched. For every out that is recorded while you are pitching, you get one-third of an inning.

2. Step 2

   Add up the total number of earned runs given up. If there are no errors in the inning, all the runs are earned runs. If there are errors, reconstruct the inning without the errors to see how many runs would have scored if the fielding had been perfect.

3. Step 3

   Multiply the earned runs by 9.

4. Step 4

   Divide by the total innings pitched.

5. Step 5

   Round the number to the second decimal place. For example, 3.2051 is 3.21.

Alex Rodriguez is only one homer away from being apart of a special group of baseball players, six to be exact, that have hit 600 or more home runs. Will tonight be the night? For higher level thinking for your students, you could have them figure out the probability of A-Rod succeeding tonight. For the younger students, you can have them count by tens or hundreds and ask them how many homers A-Rod needs to get to 600 or any other number above 600. Just remember GO YANKEES!!!! Learning with the Yankees will always be FUN!

Well the Yankees win again!!! Guess who hit a homer??? You know it, Derek Jeter (#2 for all those you did not know)! Now as for a counting lesson to tie in education and Yankees baseball, you could have your students count out ten blue counters for the Yankees and four white counters for the Royals and then ask them which is greater. GO YANKEES!!!!
